The Baha is a surgically implantable system for treatment of hearing loss that works through direct bone conduction. It transfers the sound through the bone to a functioning cochlear. While cochlear implants are for people with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, the Baha implant is for those who have conductive or mixed hearing loss, or deafness in only one ear. The Baha has been used since 1977, and was cleared by the FDA in 1996 as a treatment for conductive and mixed hearing losses in the United States. In 2002, the FDA approved its use for the treatment of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Click here for the full article about the Baha. More information at Cochlear Americas website |
